A person who is looking for depression treatment should be able to find everything they need amongst the abundant resources available in society. Yet their very depression may mean they’re unable to exert themselves enough for such a task. Their own doctor will undoubtedly help sift through available medical treatments, but they may be left to hunt on their own if they’d like to explore alternative treatment methods. It’s harder to know which alternative practitioners are properly trained and are truly reputable.

On the medical side, the Mayo Clinic website (www.mayoclinic.com) lists several possibilities on its depression/depressive disorder major page. It mentions various types of antidepressants, as well as psychotherapy, light therapy, and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). The first two options are the standard approaches, but they can also be time-consuming. Sometimes it’s as hard to find the right drug as it is to find a therapist. But the latter treatments are a bit controversial, and haven’t always been regarded as legitimate, medically effective treatments. ECT has gone in and out of vogue, for example, because of the disturbing side effects and results, and the uncertainty over jolting the brain with electricity.

Light treatments have been looked at askance in the past, with some feeling they belong more on the “alternative treatments” side of things. And when looking at some of the alternatives, it’s understandable why that uncertainty might arise. Based on non-western ideas, these can include acupuncture and aromatherapy, biofeedback or vitamin treatments. The natural, current treatments that address diet and vitamin intake methods may be based on genuine research, yet it’s difficult to judge which of the alternative methods will genuinely serve as a depression treatment.

Many doctors recommend a multi-disciplinary approach to depression treatment. By this they mean somewhat more than combining psychotherapy and drugs. Depending on the patient’s circumstances, this might also involve a social worker, dietician, or even a career counselor. And in some cases, even alternative methods of treatment are brought into the mix. What is needed more than anything is a doctor who is willing to help the person find the treatments that will work best for them. The depressed person may not have the will or the stamina to search out the new depression treatment options alone. But if their primary care physician is willing to help, then they can eventually find a therapy regime that will have the best results.

How can we combat the problems of the economy going into the next decade, whether it’s scarcity of employment, of budget capital or of energy? The Business Economics major has the innate ability to look at a pool of data and know what is to be done. These individuals are adept in business, politics, math, accounting and statistics. They work with the federal government, local governments, private firms, banks, hospitals, the stock market and a host of other fields. For people who want a secure, well-paying job, management economics is a wise field to choose.

To get an undergrad degree in Business Economics, students attending an accredited economics university will need to take courses like macro economics, microeconomics, financial accounting and reporting, calculus, economics statistics, econometrics, money/banking/credit, business writing, the stock market, labor economics, monetary economics, international trade theory, law and economics, industrial organization, economics and business strategy, organizational psychology, formal organizations and politics and the economy. Students should have a good understanding of math, politics and business. People often choose this major because they want a good job, they want to make a lot of money, they want to be a manager or CPA, they want to have a secure job or they want to get into a good graduate school.

The average starting salary for economists is $38,000 for a bachelor’s degree, $48,000 for a master’s and $70,000 for a PhD, according to a 2002 National Association of Business Economics survey. The median income for the economics major is higher than any other major, experts say. Economics research also suggests that economics majors earn 20% more than business administration majors, 19% more than accounting majors, 18% more than marketing majors and 15% more than finance majors. When a potential employer sees this major on a resume, he or she immediately understands that you have a solid foundation of math, politics, business and economic theory. Your degree also shows that you have the capacity to process complex subjects and problem solve, which is valuable in any field.

Upon graduating with a degree in Business Economics, one may work in government, business or education. People with four-year bachelor’s degrees can get hired in many entry-level administration, consulting and management trainee jobs. Yet, those who wish to pursue a career as an actual “Economist” should pursue a Master’s or PhD degree. Getting an advanced degree with as much math and accounting as possible is the best way to stand apart from the competition. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the demand for someone with a degree in economics is projected to grow 7.5% by 2016.

Many people confuse depression treatment with menopause treatment, but they are not the same things, even if they address some similar symptoms. The mood alterations during menopause and peri-menopause stem normally from fluctuations in hormones, and rather than requiring depression therapy, these can often be alleviated with diet or hormone therapy. This means that drug products that might normally be prescribed for depression might bypass the root cause of the problem even while bringing some measure of relief.

Menopause treatment, when dealing with depression, always needs to take into account the fact that estrogen plays some role in mood enhancement, while progesterone has a more destabilizing effect. Current treatments for transitional menopause symptoms generally involve some sort of hormone replacement therapy (HRT). Yet many doctors recognize that if a woman has had depressive episodes in the past, or has even had post partum depression treatment at some point, HRT can in fact worsen the risk of depression when entering the menopausal phase.

That would mean that such women might consider seeking alternative treatments to alleviate menopausal symptoms, to try to avoid increasing their depression risk even further. And while there are vitamins and supplements that can help, sometimes the best treatments will simply be to exercise and eat properly. Making sure they eat a diet containing plenty of natural estrogens may improve a woman’s mood just as well as drugs, in many cases. A few examples of these foods would be lentils, beans, apples, broccoli, beets, tomatoes, squash and olives. And there are many more. All of this is part of the natural treatment of menopause in general, but depressive symptoms that go along with menopause are as likely to be relieved as other symptoms.

However, if a woman continues to have difficulty, and she really does need comprehensive menopause treatment like HRT, even if it might make the depression worse, then a doctor can recommend other standard methods of depression therapy be added to the hormone treatments. This would primarily include the prescription of antidepressants, along with the hormone treatments themselves. If a woman is severely depressed during this time of her life, it’s well worth exploring all possible health treatments to ensure that her transition through menopause is not a miserable experience.

Beth Kaminski is a leading expert in how to cure panic attack cures and has been publishing lots of information on the anxiety disorder medications for years now.

Detecting depression in teens can be much more difficult than detecting it in adults. For one thing, as they proceed through puberty, they’re already likely prone to mood swings and a degree of gloom. It can be hard to distinguish these normal experiences from things like anxiety panic disorders and other problems stemming from depression. For all you know, the real problem may be that their face has broken out and a few acne treatments could make their misery go away. Yet there’s the real possibility of serious depression as well.

How can you discern whether your teen simply feels “blue” occasionally, or has full-blown depression and might need medical attention? If your teen’s gloomy moods aren’t balanced out by more positive things like good friends, interests and hobbies, or a generally good school experience, then these may be warning signs. Depression in teens can manifest in lack of self-esteem, isolation and lack of concentration. And of course, if there is any talk of suicide, or any of these symptoms last for more than three weeks, you may need to find a depression treatment center.

Treatments can be varied, though having discussions with a therapist may be the best place to start. They’ll try to discover if you’re dealing with an anxiety disorder or if there’s a coming together of external influences that have created a perfect storm in your teen’s life, or a combination of the two. The best treatments may include a combination of psychotherapy and antidepressants. If the depression is connected to disorders like anorexia or bulimia, then the teenager may benefit from some time in a mental health treatment center that would be better equipped to deal with all of the issues he or she is facing. They can also supervise the effects of antidepressants, which sometimes increase suicidal tendencies in teens rather than decreasing them.

Treating depression in teens as early as possible can increase the likelihood of a successful outcome. It’s true that about half of depressed teens will have occasional bouts with depression into adulthood. But treatments generally result in 50% of depressed teenagers returning to a normal life with no further experiences of depression. Even for those who will continue to face it later in life, getting them into therapy and counseling as early as possible will make it much easier for them to manage the depression when they’re older.

Manic depressive disorder, sometimes known as manic depression or bipolar disorder, isn’t one single thing. It’s more a constellation of disorders, mostly characterized by swings between highly elevated moods and severely depressed ones. With variations of the illness manifesting itself in different ways (rapid or slow cycling of moods, for example), finding the best treatments can be a real challenge. Probably the first step in getting a handle on it, in fact, is to find a therapist who knows a great deal about the disorder. Teamwork among the person with the illness and his or her doctors is the key.

Often people who live with manic depressive disorder function well in the periods between manic and depressive episodes. This means they can take an active role, along with their doctors, in devising and monitoring their own recovery depression treatments. They particularly need to guard against the temptation to go off their medications, thinking they no longer need them, if the symptoms seem to disappear. So their therapy will often not be restricted just to the drugs, but may include psychotherapy to help them recognize any of their own behaviors that might contribute to the worsening of their illness.

When it comes to the medications prescribed for manic depressives, there are a great many currently available. However, lithium has been used for many years in various forms, and seems to have the best track record for stabilizing the mood swings and even for reducing instances of suicide. One difficulty with this drug, however, is the side effects of high blood pressure, water retention and constipation. So, new treatments are often sought to see if other drugs might work as well, with fewer repercussions. Interestingly, it’s a breast cancer medicine called tamoxifen that has shown one of the best and quickest responses to a manic phase. Other mood stabilizers and antipsychotic drugs are also among the current treatments.

As constant research into manic depressive disorder goes on, and knowledge about the manifestations of this illness increases, newer drugs and treatments are also being developed. What people can contribute on their own side of the treatment equation is to gather whatever bipolar info they can, work with a therapist, and become familiar with potential weak spots in their own behavior. A successful treatment strategy can only be developed when all parties work together.

For many years the psychiatric profession didn’t even believe there could be such a thing as bipolar children. Bipolar disorder, or manic depression, was described as an illness that emerged only in adulthood, even though some early researchers seemed to have evidence that some of the symptoms that adults exhibited had actually manifested well before they were ten years old. Yet manic depression treatment options were geared explicitly toward adults for many decades because of this belief. Bipolar information about both symptoms and treatments for children was scarce for a long time.

New depression treatment has improved, but there is still far to go. Part of the problem is that many of the symptoms that manifest in bipolar children can overlap with those that occur with other disorders. For example, the intensity of a manic phase may closely resemble the hyperactivity associated with attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Indeed, some children have both, and often the extra hint that the problem isn’t just ADHD is that the children are more aggressive and have more behavioral difficulties than if he or she only had ADHD. So finding the right medical treatments can be a real challenge, not to mention diagnosing the problem in the first place.

Anxiety disorders can also be an indicator that doctors should watch for manic depression as well, since children with these disorders are more likely also to develop bipolar disorder. Children with bipolar disorder may often have had treatment already for full-blown depressive episodes, which served as precursors for the later illness. Even irritability and hypersensitivity might be warning signs, if they last for days at a time.

Diagnosis is controversial, though, because children with bipolar disorder are much more likely to be diagnosed in the United States than in other parts of the world. Interpretations vary on whether this is because there is simply over diagnosis in the U.S., or whether US doctors are simply recognizing a problem that really exists. Bipolar info and interpretation of symptoms varies considerably from country to country.

This means that treatment for manic depression will also vary between countries. Yet if this disorder is genuine, it appears to be more intense in bipolar children than in adults, so it’s important to find the right therapies. Some of the antipsychotic drugs usually prescribed for this disorder can damage the liver and increase the risk of heart problems or diabetes. Yet without the medications, children are at risk of psychosis, cognitive impairment or even suicide. Correct diagnosis is crucial, so that the best treatments can be devised, and the risk to the children minimized as much as possible.

Go ahead and do it; type “depression news” into a search engine and see what comes up. If you’re interested in doing some reading about this topic, then you’ll find exactly what you’re looking for. You can keep abreast of current and alternative treatments and drug therapies, but you will also be able to read regular news stories that relate to the topic of depression. For information from the medical world, you can look at medical sites such as www.mayoclinic.com, which have entire sections on this topic.

Some of the best sites for reporting depression news, though, will be those devoted entirely to science news. In fact, these will likely be more reliable than sites that just report general news. One example of a site that reports only scientific news is www.sciencedaily.com, which features the latest developments relating to depression under “Mind & Brian” in its “Health & Medicine” category. Here you’ll see an article about manic depression treatment at the top of its list, while farther down you might find the report of some new bipolar information that’s been discovered in a newly finished study.

For example, a recent www.sciencedaily.com posting reports a proposal made by the Rhode Island Hospital’s department of psychiatry, to redefine the list of clinical depression symptoms so they refer only to mood and cognitive indicators, while excluding those that refer to physical medical illness. Another article describes a study by the Ben-Gurion University of the Negev, Israel, measuring how adolescents’ social supports buffer the effects of terrorism. The study suggests that these supports are as much of a factor as anxiety and depression treatment options, in reducing stress among young people.

If you’re interested in following depression information from the point of view of alternative or more natural treatments, then there are sites that report on these as well. For example, the website www.webmd.com focuses more on medical therapies and discusses possible alternative treatments. And a site like www.naturalnews.com regularly features articles about depression-related topics from less medicine-oriented perspectives.

Using a web search is a good first step for finding depression news. But since a search is likely to bring up more than you can handle, you might also type in a second search term like “post partum depression treatment” or “bipolar disorder,” to narrow things down. The easiest way to keep current is to bookmark some favorite medical sites and news sites that focus exclusively on science, and that will likely be all you’ll need.
