Cerebral palsy is caused by damage to the part of the brain that controls coordination and muscle control. The majority of cerebral palsy symptoms are not the same for every child, since there are three distinct types of the condition. A child’s symptoms will depend heavily on which type he or she has. The three types are ataxic, atethoid and spastic; with spastic cerebral palsy being further categorized into spastic diplegia, spastic hemiplegia or spastic quadriplegia; depending on the limbs affected.

The majority of cerebral palsy symptoms do not have a set time frame as to when they will appear; however, once they do appear, they can make movement and coordination difficult. This in no way means that those with cerebral palsy can never function on their own though. Therapeutic procedures and techniques can be designed to help cerebral palsy children achieve their full potential. Many people who get the appropriate treatment can live happy, enjoyable and fulfilling lives. Some children may exhibit signs and symptoms during the first few days and weeks after birth, while others with a mild case of cerebral palsy may only show symptoms after a year or more.

Therapeutic procedures and techniques can range anywhere from special exercises to mental health counseling. Some of the physical therapy methods like exercises can be performed with parents in the home. It is always important to remember, however, that therapeutic programs should be tailored to the ability and condition of each individual person. A therapy program can be developed with the combined assistance of several specialists.

Specialists work together as a team to build a cerebral palsy treatment program to deal with the symptoms. A team of specialists may include psychotherapists, neurologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, orthopedic surgeons and special education teachers. There are definitive guidelines to follow when diagnosing cerebral palsy. Specialists may try to rule out other possible conditions that may show similar symptoms. Your child’s doctor will also take into consideration such factors as muscle tone, reflexes, movement and visible limb deformities.

Parents should know when to expect babies to perform certain motor tasks, and they should be concerned if their baby is not learning to crawl, grasp, sit, stand or walk at age appropriate levels. This is even truer if the child is over one year of age. Think about seeing a specialist if you suspect that your child has delays in motor function development.

Upon closer inspection of cerebral palsy symptoms some of them can be quite alarming, yet they do not spell the end of a good life for your child. If you seek out therapeutic assistance as soon as possible, treatments can help your child become the best that he or she can be. There is help and cerebral palsy support out there for your child and your family in dealing with this disorder.

Cerebral palsy is a life-changing event that can alter the lives of both the child and his or her family. Many families don’t have the financial backing to cover the exorbitant costs of therapy and treatment for their child who has cerebral palsy. When this condition is a direct result of a medical injury, you can consult with a cerebral palsy lawyer to discuss whether compensation is merited. In some cases, a person can get discounts on medications and treatments as well as monetary compensation if their attorney negotiates a settlement.

A very common cause of cerebral palsy is mishandling a child during delivery that cause brain damage in the cerebrum. The areas of the brain that are affected are the sections that control muscle movement. Damage to these areas causes a child to lose muscle coordination. Because these symptoms are not always apparent in a newborn, diagnosis of cerebral palsy in children can take months or even years.

The first thing you want to do is contact a cerebral palsy lawyer if you feel that your child has suffered a birth injury. Once you get in touch with an attorney, you should explain to them the circumstances that caused the injury. Your attorney will need know about the actual birth as well as the pregnancy, including medical records from the first doctor’s visit up until your post-birth visit.

After listening and gathering information surrounding the circumstances of your child’s birth injury and speaking with the doctor and the hospital, a lawyer can then determine if you have a case or not. If you do have a case, then the attorney will work on your behalf to win compensation. It should always be remembered that cerebral palsy treatment can be extremely expensive. You should seek help from a cerebral palsy attorney in order to get the proper compensation and also negotiate treatment costs for your child.

There are associations for cerebral palsy support as well, but many times these organizations can only do so much. They usually have so many cerebral palsy patients that are in need of financial support that they have a waiting list. Two sites to check out are www.cpfamilynetwork.org and www.ucp.org. They may be able to help you find alternative resources in your area.

Unless he or she wins your case, a cerebral palsy lawyer receives no compensation. This means that an attorney won’t take your case unless he or she believes you can win. To ensure your child’s future after a birth injury, consult with a lawyer expert about what’s next. The financial costs of having this condition over a lifetime are astronomical.

If it is insurance that you need, Rene Lacape is the person to look for.

It is estimated that almost 800,000 people in the United States alone have cerebral palsy. Symptoms can be mild to severe and debilitating. The United Cerebral Palsy Association was formed to help parents and their cerebral palsy child lead healthier, happier lives. They typically can do this by hosting charity events to raise cash in order to help parents pay for medical treatments, therapies and medications that their children need. Therapy alone can be very expensive. If you are a parent who is struggling to provide care for your child, then you can seek help through the UCP.

United Cerebral Palsy started during the Civil Rights Movement in the late nineteen forties and early nineteen fifties. The UCP Association and the Muscular Dystrophy Association, as well as John F. Kennedy’s Panel on Mental Retardation were among a growing number of advocacy groups specializing in assisted-learning programs. This strong push also helped bring special education into schools across the country in the nineteen sixties when school access was established for children with disabilities at state and local levels.

Scooters, wheelchairs and hand controls can increase the mobility and improve the quality of activities of daily living for the child with cerebral palsy. Exercise machines and easels can also improve the quality of life for these children; allowing them to explore their interests in a more meaningful way. There are products and services available to assist caregivers as well. Whether it’s grab bars near the toilet, an automatic lift for the bathtub or computer software that aids in communication, technology is changing the way parents and their afflicted children interact in wonderful ways.

UCP also has a research foundation that seeks new treatment options and preventative methods. For more than fifty years, the foundation has looked at how German measles and maternal-child blood type incompatibility (Rh factor) have contributed to the cause of this disability. Currently, there is research going on regarding the role that low birth weight, premature birth and maternal infections affect the brain of a fetus. Through scientific research, they hope to discover ways to replace brain cells that have been lost in fetuses and allow for a more normal development through early treatment.

Whether you have a child with cerebral palsy or not, you can still join the United Cerebral Palsy Association. Being part of an organization that helps those in need can be a rewarding and fulfilling way to use your time and energy. Giving back to your community by volunteering is what helps allow the UCP Association and others like it to target those who are truly in need.

The definition of cerebral palsy is that it is a deficiency or loss of motor control with involuntary spasms. Further, it is described as a congenital disorder, typically non-progressive and originating from infancy or early childhood, characterized by a major disorder of motor functioning. Cerebral palsy is a condition with various combinations and degrees of impaired muscle strength and tone, coordination and intelligence. As a parent of a child with cerebral palsy, you may be confused about what all this means. Let’s take a look at cerebral palsy causes and why there is more focus on treating the symptoms than developing different learning pathways for the brain.

Cerebral palsy is the expression of a brain injury, in that it is a symptom or set of symptoms of a brain injury. It is the way in which the injury manifests itself in a child with cerebral palsy. The term cerebral palsy is a term used to describe a group of sub-symptoms of brain injury. These symptoms sometimes include spasticity, athetosis, ataxia, epilepsy, poor vision, poor hearing, delayed motor development, impaired motor function, poor language development, drooling, difficulties socializing, mental retardation and many others.

It is important to understand what causes cerebral palsy. It is much easier to understand the concept of the disorder and the ramifications of brain injury than it is to just label it “cerebral palsy.” It is also important that a person should be aware of the problems with terminology and how it encourages the development of a fixation upon symptoms instead of the root cause of the disorder. If we can find a way to encourage development of new ways of thinking, within the near future, a cure for this disorder can be revealed.

A primary principle of treating of a child with cerebral palsy is to decrease or eliminate symptoms by judging whether they are an imminent threat to the child. After the serious symptoms are treated, a concentration on the cause of those symptoms, namely the brain injury, should be undertaken. In cerebral palsy children, the reason why those symptoms exist is because the brain injury has prevented the normal development of muscle function and coordination from taking place.

To have an insurance policy is to have security.

Athetoid cerebral palsy makes up about ten percent of the entire cerebral palsy cases in the world. It is generally caused by damage to the cerebellum or basal ganglia section of the midbrain. The basal ganglia are responsible for maintaining coordinated and smooth movements and posture for the whole body. If this section of the brain is damaged, then of course movement and posture is affected. As in most cases of cerebral palsy, the patient has limited or no control over the muscles of his or her body.

Several cases case studies have shown that a person suffering from athetoid CP is more intelligent than the average person. It is with this information in mind that helps you understand how this disorder can be depressing, since the person has trouble even scratching his or her nose or holding a pen. The person with this disorder needs to put in a lot of extra effort and concentration on muscle coordination to get a normal result. In many cases of cerebral palsy, symptoms include drooling, involuntary grimacing and constant movements of the limbs.

An athetoid cerebral palsy child demonstrates serious symptoms. They include unmanageable and involuntary slow writhing movements of the limbs, involuntary movements of the face or tongue, the inability to walk or stand without help because of poor muscle tone, difficulty in grasping or holding objects, the inability to feed themselves and perform activities of daily living due to uncoordinated movements, drooling and tongue thrusting, and the inability to speak or swallow food normally.

Treatment for athetoid CP includes prescribing a group of drugs known as anti-cholinergics, which are used to decrease abnormal and unwanted movements. It blocks the effects of acetylcholin, which is what triggers muscle contraction when acting on nerve cells. The other drugs prescribed for use are trihexyphenidyl, benztropine and procyclidine. There are also physical therapies that can be used to help restore certain movements, like swallowing, as well as decrease slurred speech. Advancements in technology enable patients to use athetoid cerebral palsy therapy devices, such as voice synthesizers, to make speech clearer.

The type of cerebral palsy known as athetoid CP can be distressing for the individual who must deal with this condition. A good treatment program to include addressing physical symptoms as well as psychological distress is the best course of action. Encouragement is the key to a better outcome. Encouragement drives the person to try harder and do better. Though this condition does not get progressively worse, like spastic CP, the hardships on the patient can be just as great.

You may have heard of cerebral palsy but where unsure about its symptoms or what causes it to happen. Children with cerebral palsy may not have across the board symptoms, so the condition is broken down into three different types of cerebral palsy. Each type exhibits its own set of unique symptoms. They are athetoid, spastic and ataxic. Symptoms of cerebral palsy in children can sometimes be hard to spot until the child has reached age three. When developmental milestones are not met, doctors and parents begin to question what is going on and that is usually when the diagnosis is made.

Defining the disorder called cerebral palsy isn’t as simple as just calling it a disorder of movement. There are actually three different types of cerebral palsy; athetoid, spastic and ataxic. Athetoid cerebral palsy causes slow and sluggish involuntary movements or movements that cannot be controlled. Spastic cerebral palsy, on the other hand, is what triggers movement and stiffness problems. Ataxic cerebral palsy causes problems with depth perception and balance. Children with cerebral palsy will show signs of the condition before the age of five.

As of this writing, no one really knows what if the exact cause of cerebral palsy. What researchers do know is that there are several factors found that contribute to the condition. Damage to the brain during developmental stages in utero is said to be a trigger of cerebral palsy. The areas of the brain that are affected are the ones that control motor movements. The biggest unanswered question is why the damage occurs in the first place?

The signs and symptoms of cerebral palsy are a large part of what defines the condition. Early symptoms that occur before a child turns three years old may indicate that the child hasn’t developed proper motor skill functioning. That is because cerebral palsy in infants often times will trigger a developmental delay. Parents may notice that their child is not reaching developmental milestone such as rolling over, smiling, crawling, walking or sitting like other children. Other signs include unusual posture, abnormal muscle tone and a difficult pregnancy that involves fevers, bleeding and infection.

Now that you know what cerebral palsy is, you can more fully understand how difficult it is for children with cerebral palsy to live with it. There is still no definitive cure for this condition, yet scientists and researchers have found many possible ways to prevent cerebral palsy from happening in the first place. Giving immunizations and making sure a pregnant woman receives enough folate are just a couple of ways that have been found to possibly prevent cerebral palsy in children.
