Skincare and acne are two things that matter a great deal for many people. When you think about it, your skin is your largest organ. You need to take care of it and nurture it. Here are some tips you can put to use to help keep you skin in good condition.

In the arsenal of weapons that are available to clear acne, don’t forget to explore the possibilities on nontraditional treatments. If you are using prescription medications or over the counter treatments in order to clear acne, you should boost your treatment program by considering some of the nontraditional programs as well. One thing you need to do though is talk it over with your doctor. It is important to make sure your symptoms are and methods are in line with your physical condition. The nontraditional remedies can help you in your quest for overall health and fight acne symptoms as well.

Diet is a very significant factor in the presence of acne. Certain foods can foster the presence of acne. Consumption of these types of foods should be reduced or completely avoided if possible. Dairy products such as milk and cheese can contribute to the formation of acne. Additionally, refined and cooked carbohydrates such as flour, bread, and rice can also affect acne. Other foods that should be avoided are cooked fats, such as fried food, and meats like beef and pork. The foods that should be avoided are acid-forming foods in the body. In order to reduce acne, you should attempt to eat more alkaline-forming foods. Fresh vegetables, fruit, and nuts (sparingly) are very good to eat when trying to reduce acne.

Some sunlight is helpful for general body health and to clear acne. One of the things you get from natural sunlight is vitamin D. However, too much sun can definitely be harmful to the skin whether or not a person is suffering from acne. Contrary to some opinions, a suntan does not cure acne, although a current tan will make red blotches and blemishes less visible. Keep in mind what was just said, you are not fixing anything, but you are just covering the blemishes.

Water as an acne treatment is useful either as an external or internal treatment. Use water to gently clean the skin surface without rubbing or abrading delicate and sensitive skin. Water taken internally, of course is important for nutrition as well as for the strength of the circulatory system. The water can help you keep your skin clear. Dehydration is also a very important factor in the formation of acne. The skin needs to be hydrated from the inside in order to prevent blocked pores. Drinking great amounts of water is a good practice when attempting to reduce acne. Eating water-rich foods can also help with hydration.

Acupuncture has been recommended as treatment for many conditions from obesity to acne. Proponents say that since acne and many other disorders are the result of imbalance between the yin and the yang of a system, to clear acne you should insert fine needles or wires into precise points of the body. The needles help to align the natural forces so that the negative condition is no longer present. Opponents of the treatment mode do not accept the anecdotal reports and little scientific data is available.

Another of the nontraditional treatments that are being studied in order to determine their ability to clear acne symptoms is that of hormone treatments. In fact, some birth control pills are now being prescribed as an acne treatment simply because they contain the hormones that have been shown to be effective in treating acne as well as preventing unwanted pregnancy.

There is no doubt that fluctuations in hormone levels have been linked to outbreaks of acne, especially in those sufferers in the adolescent years. The exact cause of acne flare ups is still being researched, but it is known that there is a link between hormone levels and acne outbreaks.

You wake up one morning and upon looking at the mirror, you discover in wild horror that you have developed a few pimples overnight. In panic you cry, “Acne!” This would be a typical scenario among many households especially where teenagers reside. However, before reaching for a handful of over-the-counter acne cures, it would be beneficial for you to remember that not all cases of pimples are indicative of acne.

Nevertheless, if you have indeed acquired acne, the immediate and obvious manifestation of this is the occurrence of pimples. What then is the difference between acne and pimples? To some extent it is just semantics; most people use acne and pimples interchangeably. To be thorough about it, acne refers to the infection of the skin’s pores brought about by the P. acnes bacteria. It is this bacterial infection that gives rise to the symptomatic pimples.

Factors contributing to acne
There are three distinct things that are happening which are contributory to the condition we refer to as acne.

First of all, the pores of the skin – and they are indeed numerous – gets blocked by the constantly sloughed dead skin cells. This blockage of the pores allows the oils of our skin, referred to as sebum, to accumulate. This build up of sebum is the second contributing condition.

The third factor, which is also the defining condition for acne is the infection of the lining of the pores by the bacteria Propionibacterium acnes. The bacteria are abundant and are largely a resident of the skin’s microscopic ecosystem. It feeds off on the sebum and the subsequent infection of the pores results in the breaking down of the surrounding skin tissues, thus producing the dreaded pimple.

What acne cures should do
Knowing these three factors that allows the acne condition to exist and persist, the acne cure you should avail must answer these key areas on a point by point basis.

First, it must unblock the pores as well as prevent blockage altogether. Washing the skin with soap, helps to some extent as good hygienic practices are always advisable. However, the blockage is not easily removed due to the hyperkeratinization of the dead skin cells, bonding them closely together and making them harder to detach from the pore. Topical retinoids, such as tretinoin and adapalene and retinol, have a way of normalizing the way dead skin cells slough off and in this sense is an effective remedy for this acne causing factor.

Secondly, an acne cure should address the increase in sebum. Oily skin has always been seen as a precursor to pimples and acne. Hence, if the excess sebum is not addressed it is possible for the acne to recur. Too much washing of the affected skin, while it may address the need to remove accumulated oils, can also trigger an overproduction of sebum. Hormonal changes during puberty are the logical impetus for over active sebaceous glands that produce the sebum. Therefore, hormonal therapy may be helpful in this regard as well as proper hygiene.

Fighting off the bacterial infection is the third important aspect that acne cures must achieve. Here, topical bactericidals and antibiotics serve its purpose. Among the well known ingredients utilized for topical acne medications is benzoyl peroxide.

Most anti-acne solutions do not address all three factors that contribute to acne. Thus, doctors may sometimes prescribe a regimen consisting of a combination of acne cures. Handling acne is obviously a balancing act. Therefore consult with a good doctor to ensure that your fight against acne stands a good chance of success.

Pimples are the result of pores getting clogged with oil, dead skin cells, and bacteria deep in the skin around a hair follicle. Whiteheads are the result of a fully blocked pore, while blackheads are partially clogged so that parts of the contaminants are sent to the top layer of skin. Despite popular belief, pimples are not just the result of dirty skin or not washing enough.

Learning how to cure pimples so that you have fewer breakouts, and the ones that do occur are not so intense, is a matter of three simple steps.

1. Keep your surface skin clean with a mild soap. The harsh cleansers you see in the store should be avoided because they also contain chemicals that will deplete your skin of nourishment and moisture, leading to dry skin. It is best to wash with your hands in a gentle motion, since scrubbing with a rag can irritate skin, especially if you have an outbreak.

You do not need to wash your face more than twice a day, and doing so more often could also contribute to irritated, dry skin. Though keeping the skin clean can help reduce the amount of dirt and other things from our environment get into the pores, it will not cure pimples by itself since the real causes of acne occur within the body.

2. Instead of medicating pimples with products found in the store or bought through the mail, go for natural products which can clear up an outbreak without drying out the skin or irritating the pimples. Benzoyl peroxide is an inexpensive ingredient in many acne medications and can be applied directly to the skin on its own. It adds oxygen to the skin and can help clear up acne outbreaks as well as prevent new ones. Try not to overuse this product because too much can dry out the skin some.

Tip: An all natural way to oxygenate the skin and keep the pores clear is to get regular exercise!

You can also use lavender and tea tree oils to help reduce the occurrence of pimples in the future and to help them heal.

3. You need to keep your face from drying out by drinking a lot of water and applying a light moisturizer if necessary. You do not want a moisturizer that contains oil, especially mineral oils. Many night creams will use mineral oil so look carefully. If you cannot find ingredients on a product it is best to avoid it.

Tip: If you are a woman and feel your pimples are caused by menstrual hormones, then you can clear up this problem by getting regular physical activity every day and eliminating foods which are harmful to your skin, such as many dairy products and foods high in fats.

Learning how to choose the best acne cure often depends on the types of acne you commonly experience.

Whiteheads. These are the ones you will be most tempted to pop, but it is important that you resist that urge if at all possible. If you are concerned with how they look on your face, consider that popping them will make them look even worse as they get red, swollen, and may even bleed and leak. If you do decide to pop one, hold a tissue around it and squeeze onto the tissue to avoid spreading bacteria around and creating an even bigger problem. Wash the area immediately with a mild soap and make sure not to rub and irritate it further.

Whiteheads are a result of a pore that is completely blocked and the white stuff inside is a mixture of oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells. They will typically go away much quicker than other acne forms if you keep the area as clean as possible and do not add to the problem by covering it with oily makeup. Water based makeup, or the new products that include acne fighting agents in light foundation are better options.

The best acne cure for whiteheads is to prevent the pores from clogging in the future. If you are experiencing these during a certain period of your menstrual cycle, while pregnant, or are a teenager, then the cause is likely hormonal. Some things that can affect the hormones in your body to bring relief include avoiding greasy, fatty, and sugary foods as much as possible because they can cause your glands to excrete more oil; exercise regularly because it helps keep your hormones stable and sweating through your pores can help keep them cleared out; if you are on birth control consider switching to a different pill because some mess with your hormones more than others.

Diet and exercise is a long term commitment, but it is the only way guaranteed to cure acne in the long term because it is a problem stemming from within your body, not just on the outer skin level.

Blackheads. It is commonly believed these are caused by dirty skin, but that is usually not the case. They can be due to a pore clogged on the surface level but usually they result from a pore that is only partially blocked deeper down, allowing grease and other contaminants to rise to the top layer of the skin. The black color is not necessarily dirt, though if you have very poor hygiene it could be.

The best acne cure for blackheads is the same as with whiteheads, but you want to make sure to keep the surface of the skin clean as well in case that is part of the cause for your blackheads. You need a very mild soap, but should avoid the harsh chemical based cleansers in the store because they will dry out the skin. Make sure to wash once or twice a day and try to avoid resting your face in your hands because that transfers a lot of dirt into the pores.

There are more serious forms of acne such as rosacea and hard nodules below the skin and you may want to take all of the treatment ideas given here and visit your dermatologist as well. They often have ways of reducing swelling and pain that come along with more serious forms of acne.

Did you find this article beneficial? Is your acne ruining your life? Are you experiencing a loss of confidence and are in dire need for an acne cure that works? These products can be expensive! How to get rid of pimples?

Most people recover from a bout of acne without ever suffering any serious complications. Unfortunately, there are those who are more predisposed to having acne scars compared to other people. While contracting acne itself is already a source of concern and embarrassment, becoming disfigured with acne scars can be even more problematic for those beset by such scarring. There are several methods for acne scar removal that provide some hope and intervention to those afflicted by such scars.

Marks arising from acne are not necessarily scars. Most marks left from treated acne, also referred to as macules, will also fade albeit in more time than is preferred by most. Macules usually take 6 to 12 months to disappear entirely.

Real acne scarring however will show the signs of the infection indefinitely. For some, they can live with the scar. However, for most individuals having acne scars are an unacceptable situation. That is why there is a real demand for acne scar removal methodologies that would reduce or otherwise completely eliminate the scarring.

Causes of acne scars
Since acne is actually a bacterial infestation of the skin, the body would react appropriately to defend itself. White blood cells, our first line defense against infection, goes to work against the acne along with various other enzymes and chemicals in our bodies that are designed to fight off diseases. This defensive counterattack, however, may leave damaged tissues in the process. In the event of considerable tissue damage, the skin will leave an obvious scar.

Acne scars come in two varieties. The first is hyperthropic or keloid scars, meaning an outgrowth is present on the skin or there is a marked thickening of the skin. The other one is atrophic scarring, where there is a loss of tissue and the affected area develops a noticeable depression.

Furthermore there are several types of atrophic scars namely, ice-pick scars, depressed fibrotic scars, soft scars, follicular macular atrophy or atrophic macules. They are differentiated by their size, location in the body and severity.

Common acne scar removal methods
When acne scars are suspected in a patient, immediate dermatological intervention is necessary to lessen its impact. The scars may become impervious to the more simple treatments if the scarring is left untreated during the early stages.

Dermabrasion is one way to combat hypertrophic acne scars although it is not advisable for depressed scars. The process involves the use of an abrasive brush to remove damaged surface skin. This, in turn, promotes the growth of new skin. It is a rather painful procedure which is why a light local anaesthetic is used during dermabrasion.

The less painful version of the above, called microdermabrasion uses light abrasion via minute particles, thereby effectively exfoliating areas of the skin that has been scarred. It is comparable in effect to chemical peels which is also a prescribed method of acne scar removal. The skin regenerates after microdermabrasion and chemical peeling resulting in clearer, smoother skin.

For deeper or more severe cases of acne scar, laser therapy is the preferred mode of treatment. Fractional laser resurfacing is also described as microthermal wounding wherein the regenerated skin coupled with collagen stimulation promotes a less noticeable or even a scar-free look.

Acquiring scarring from acne is not a hopeless situation. Dermatological techniques such as those mentioned here are effective acne scar removal procedures. It is advisable to first consult with a qualified dermatologist to gain a deeper understanding of how to properly deal with acne scars.

There are a lot of ways to prevent acne from affecting your skin. Before any acne outbreak, acne would not be in its worst when prevented. Nobody else could help you out of the disease but you alone. You should always take good care of your skin in order to avoid an acne eruption.

Steps to prevent acne

Acne could be prevented in more ways than one. As long as you know the steps to obtaining clear, healthy skin, acne would not go along your way. Preventing them from occupying your skin would start from your own regimen and your hygiene. Here are some of the things to follow in order to prevent you from the impact that acne may bring:

- Know how to clean your skin. Cleaning your skin does not necessarily mean choosing an expensive soap bar or facial wash. The product you choose depends on your skin type. There are a lot of facial washes in the market that are cheap but could give expensive lasting results. You should also take note that cleansing should be done gently. Do not exaggerate it as it may clog pores and dry up the skin. These two things are the causes of acne.

- Do not squeeze your skin. There are people who love to pick or pinch skin especially when there are either whiteheads or blackheads on the rise. Pricking these skin problems would only increase possibilities of having acne.

- Avoid toners with alcohol content. Toners that have much alcohol content would strip off the skin of its natural moisture thus leading to possibilities of oil production by the sebaceous glands. An oil-free skin means an acne-free skin too.

- For men, shave carefully. Blemishes brought about by nicking could lead to acne eruption. Shaving your skin should be done with a safety razor that has a sharp blade. Use shaving creams after each shave to soften the surface thus giving it a smooth, supple finish.

- Give a personal touch to choosing your cosmetics. Women are too obsessed of using make-up to enhance their skin appearance. There are product brands that may not be suitable for your skin. If you have been using make-up for quite some time now, it is assumed that you know what suits your skin well. Assess products especially those that are given to you as gifts. This is not to discriminate the gift-givers. This is just to remind you to take a deeper sense of responsibility in choosing the right cosmetic products for you.

These are just some of the basic things to follow in order to prevent acne from coming out. The more you know your skin, the greater your capabilities are to determine the right things to do in taking care of it.

If you are looking for a fast and easy fix for your acne problem, look no further than Mother Nature. Acne makes you feel like never leaving the house and hiding from your friends and family, but with a little effort there is hope. Try these quick and simple remedies to cure your acne problem for good.

First off, take a good look at your diet. Your skin is sensitive to what you eat; just like any other part of your body. If you want better skin, you need better health. Increase the amount of fresh fruits and vegetables in your diet.

Drink at least six to eight glasses of water a day to cleanse your skin from the inside out. Cut back on caffeine, sugar, alcohol and fat in your diet. Most of all, do not smoke. Nothing is worse for your skin, or the rest of your body for that matter, than smoking.

Sleep is another vital way to aid your skin in recovery from acne problems. Make sure you get at least seven or eight hours of shut eye a night to let your skin heal properly.

Keep your bedtime consistent and drink decaffeinated chamomile or white tea before bed. You will benefit from the antioxidant, relaxation and extra hydration as you sleep.

It is important to cleanse your face with a mild acne wash every night before bed. Use a cleanser with a small amount of salicylic acid to kill the bacteria present on your skin and aid in acne recovery. Then, always follow your cleansing with an oil free moisturizer.

Many moisturizers are specially formulated to work with your cleanser to fight acne. Experiment with different brands until you find the right combination for your skin.

Exfoliation is another critical part of the process of managing acne. Try to exfoliate with a deep cleansing mask once a week. Never use harsh scrubs on your skin, as they will irritate your skin more and even cause scarring.

Now that your skin is clean and hydrated, it is time to consider spot treatments for your blemishes. Some people swear by over-the-counter remedies or prescription medication from their dermatologist or family doctor. In addition to topical creams, many people also take antibiotics for particularly bad cases of acne.

However, there are other natural alternatives to pills and chemicals. Tea tree oil is a natural astringent. Try it on your acne blemishes to see overnight results.

Also, a tiny dab of rubbing alcohol on a cotton swab is an effective way to disinfect acne. To speed healing, a tiny dab of antibacterial ointment is often helpful as well.

Keeping your skin clear is not an easy task. It requires healthy living from the inside out. Having some good knowledge of proper skincare methods is also very helpful.

When you wage war against acne, it’s important to know your options. Over time, it becomes evident what techniques work best for you. Until then, try all the methods you can and soon you will start seeing clearer skin.

The number one way to prevent teenage acne is simple… personal hygiene. Personal hygiene is the elephant in the room when it comes to the subject of teenager acne. I have listed 3 tips for teens and parents to consider.

Teens should take a shower immediately after practice, games, or playing.

As a teen struggling with acne, I honestly didn’t have the best personal hygiene. I was an athlete throughout my teen years and I sweated a lot. When I got home from practicing or playing a game, I didn’t always take a shower right then. Due to fatigue, I would often fall asleep and not take a shower until the next morning. This bad habit was I believe the culprit for my acne problems. The dirt from the sweat clogged my pores, my clothes were dirty and sweaty causing my face and body to harbor acne producing bacteria. It is a must to take a shower immediately after exercising.

Teens should wash your face in the morning and at night.

I was never good at consistently washing my face at least twice a day. Washing your face in the mornings only before school is not good enough. It never dawned on me that 24 hours between facial washings is the perfect setup for an acne outbreak. Many teens are lazy just like I was. Prevention takes effort but is worth it in the end.

Teens should change their pillowcases and bedsheets often.

Sleeping on the same pillowcase and bed linen for day is poor hygiene. Since most teens don’t like to bathe, it makes sense that the pillowcase and bed linen are breeding grounds for acne bacteria. Many people like sleeping on their stomachs which exposes their face to the pillow. If the pillowcase is dirty then there is an increased likelihood that acne will occur. The average teen struggles with making up their beds and applying new bed sheets. Laziness in this manner promotes potential acne problems.

From birth until maybe between ages 6-8 parents helped bathe their kids. When the kids were of age to bathe themselves they got lazy and started developing poor hygiene and bad habits. These bad habits directly tie into teen acne. So, before buying the next new acne medication, teens should consider their personal hygiene.

Stacey Reid is a former teen acne sufferer who now offers tips and information on acne prevention at his blogThe Acne Relief.

Acne is a common skin malady that affects many adolescents and even some older folk. The wide occurrence of acne cuts across gender and cultural differences as males and females anywhere in the world are susceptible to the condition. As such, traditional home treatment for acne exists everywhere.

Some of these home based cures seem practical while others are a tad far fetched. These homemade remedies have been trivialized, tried, and tested over many years. It may be worth the look to examine some of the more sensible home grown solutions available for acne.

Facing the myths on acne

A common belief is that acne is caused by dirty skin. While this may sound somewhat truthful, it is incorrect to say that pollutants alone cause acne. In fact unhygienic conditions simply aggravate the acne condition. Nonetheless, the health of a person’s skin is certainly a very important consideration. So, what then causes acne?

The human skin sheds millions of dead skin cells everyday. Not to mention that it harbors a veritable ecosystem of good and bad bacteria. This, combined with the onset of elevated hormones during puberty provides ideal circumstances for acne-causing bacteria to flourish within blocked oil-filled pores of the skin. Acne therefore is a bacterial infection of the skin brought about by blockage of the pores by an excess of dead skin cells and an unhealthy build-up of skin oils or sebum.

There are those that say certain foods, such as chocolates or other fatty or sugary items cause acne. While there are no scientific proofs supporting this, most physicians would dissuade acne patients from eating oil-rich foods as a precaution to a full blown acne infection.

As common sense would dictate, hygiene is vital whether or not the acne malady exists. Keeping your skin clean by washing with a mild soap can reduce the build-up of oil and dead skin and may be beneficial in unblocking the skin’s pores. A fair warning though: excessive washing can cause the skin to secrete more oil than is necessary. Hence, washing twice a day at most should be enough; otherwise it would be detrimental and may even worsen the acne.

Home grown remedies for acne
Aloe vera is popular among herbalists because of their well-accepted medicinal properties. Extracts of aloe vera are regarded as effective on skin diseases and for treating wounds. Aloe vera extracts are known to perform antibacterial and antifungal functions and this may have been generalized to cases of acne. Nevertheless, there are no significant scientific studies that support the use of aloe vera in the management of acne.

The papaya fruit is another known traditional treatment for acne and other skin conditions. While it does not seem to possess antibacterial properties, the papaya is laden with the papain enzyme, useful for breaking down protein. It can be deduced that this tenderizing effect of papaya can be applied to remedy keratin blockages on the pores. Again, however, no scientific proof exists to categorically confirm the effectivity of papaya on acne.

Other substances used in home based acne solutions include tea tree oil and neem oil both of which have some limited support from a few studies. Tea tree oil in particular is said to be comparable to benzoyl peroxide, one of the leading active ingredients of over-the-counter medications for acne.

In conclusion, diet, keeping your skin clean and a few garden remedies may be beneficial in managing an acne infection. Even so, it is best to consult a physician before trying out any home treatment for acne.

You can probably remember suffering from acne at some point during your life – and desperately trying just about anything to get rid of it. Acne is most common during the teenage years – around 85% of teenagers suffer from it – although it is also surprisingly common in older people, especially women.

Cures for acne have been around almost as long as acne itself. The Romans used to treat it by bathing in hot, often sulfurous mineral water; today’s treatments aren’t quite so extreme. There are many different products available to treat acne, although some acne treatments can take up to several months to show significant results; and some treatments have not been medically proven. Different people can benefit from different treatments; it’s a question of trial and error.

If you have tried all the lotions and creams on the market with no success, consider trying one of the many natural remedies that are available – you probably have many of the products that are said to cure acne already in your home. As most women already know, cucumber is good for the skin and it also helps to treat acne. Apply cucumber paste to your face and leave it there for a few minutes and you should see improvements after a couple of weeks.

Lemon juice mixed with rose water is said to be effective – apply it to your face and then remove after thirty minutes or so; you may notice results after just a few days. Toothpaste isn’t just good for your teeth – apply a small amount of toothpaste to your acne overnight and your skin should look and feel better the next morning. And mint has long been used as an acne cure – apply the juice from mint leaves to your face before going to bed.

Hormonal acne treatment products have become increasingly popular during the last few years, especially among adult women; the two main options being antiandrogens and oral contraceptives An estimated 60% of women who suffer from acne don’t benefit from more conventional acne treatment and can usually benefit from hormonal treatments, which work by lowering the amount of hormones, reducing oil secretion and preventing pores from clogging.

And water is effective as a cure for acne; it’s certainly one of the cheapest treatments available. Try to drink at least four pints of water every day; preferably along with a healthy diet that includes plenty of green vegetables and fresh fruit. A regular routine of yoga is also said to be good for the skin in general; and if you do suffer from acne, avoid using heavy make-up which tends to make it worse.

So if you are suffering from acne, don’t panic – try some natural cures. They just may work for you as they have done for many others.

Michael Murray is a long time acne sufferer who has beaten it. Check out his acne treatment resource site for more tips on how to beat acne.
